How to Clean a Diamond Ring at Home

There are many old wives’ tales regarding the best way to make a diamond sparkle, and how to clean rings in particular. Being worn more frequently than most other items of jewellery, rings tend to attract lots of debris and dust from being worn on the hand. Solitaire diamond rings are the most likely to be worn on a daily basis as they are often chosen as engagement rings.

It is important to focus on the back of the ring setting, rather than only cleaning the surface of the face of the diamond. The setting of the ring is the part which is closest to the skin; therefore it will inevitably be the part which collects dirt.

What Is Best to use for Diamond Cleaning?

The best piece of equipment that we can suggest for thorough cleaning is a soft bristled toothbrush, akin to the type which is recommended for younger children. The bristles will allow you to clean effectively around all facets and types of settings, while not being abrasive or harmful in any way.

The big no-no with cleaning diamond jewellery is using anything with bleach, or a corrosive solution that is used for cleaning any other type of surface. This can damage the diamond and the metal setting, and this damage would be irreversible.

One traditional idea is to use a strong, clear grain based alcohol such as vodka or gin to clean your diamond. The science behind this theory is that the high level of ethanol is a natural solvent. It will chemically remove any stray dirt that is on the surface of the diamond or trapped inside the setting of the ring.

Baking soda is another traditional solution to many cleaning quandaries. When combined with water, it to forms a thick paste that becomes a fantastic product for cleaning diamonds and metal settings. As with all cleaning, it is best to rinse thoroughly with warm water to remove any residue.

Our personal recommendation for cleaning diamond solitaire rings is to use soap diluted with water. Any kind of regular household soap, such as washing up liquid or hand soap can be used. As with any type of cleaning, leaving the jewellery to soak is preferable; this loosens any solidified particles in hard to reach areas.

The best and most meticulous method of cleaning diamond solitaire rings is to take your jewellery to your jeweller. This way you can have the diamond’s settings checked, as well as having it professionally cleaned using an ultrasonic system. An ultrasonic system is a specialised tank which is filled with liquid – which the jewellery is submersed in – and then produces high frequency sound waves. These sound waves can disturb and remove the tiniest dirt particles from normally unreachable parts of the jewellery.
