We are always particularly proud to be able to help our customers find the perfect present for a loved one, and the being part of the experience of the purchase of an engagement ring is one of our absolute favourite parts of our work.
Engagement rings come in all shapes, sizes and styles. We have a great blog on the differences between styles of engagement rings through the ages, and also a blog demonstrating how a 1 carat diamond looks on the hand, so as to give you a clearer idea of which varieties you and your partner might prefer, and also to give you some basic information on diamond cuts, styles that each era was famed for and the size of the ring that you might want to look for.
However, you may already have a good idea of what you’re looking for in terms of an engagement ring. If you decide that the very traditional diamond solitaire ring is not necessarily the only option for your bride-to-be, then we have a wealth of options for you to peruse!
All gemstone rings can be engagement rings, although certain types and styles are certainly more popular than others. It is completely dependent on the wearer’s preferences and personal taste, and if you think that your other half would prefer something different to everyone else that is completely one of a kind and original, then look no further than a gemstone engagement ring.
The Best Gemstones for Engagement Rings
Technically speaking, the best gemstones for day to day wear (as is usually the intention with engagement rings) are the most durable and strongest gemstones. Be wary of any advice suggesting that a particular stone is much more suitable than another, as truthfully, the differences in hardiness are minute, unless your intended will be wearing the ring while undertaking especially strenuous physical activities.
Rubies and sapphires are stronger than other gemstones, followed by emeralds, amethyst, aquamarines, citrine, topaz, tourmaline and tanzanite, all of these gemstones are relatively sturdy. Generally speaking, pearls and opals are not advised for engagement rings, however with the correct care and caution, they can last a lifetime. The usual advice is to remove any jewellery during any task or event that could harm the item. As long as this is kept in mind, a gemstone engagement ring should be the perfect choice for the love of your life!
Types of Gemstone Engagement Rings
Solitaire gemstone engagement rings are a popular choice with our customers, as they are similar to the traditional diamond solitaire in style and shape, but have the added extra interest of more colour and unusual stone.
Trilogy & Five Stone Rings
Trilogy rings are another conventional and popular engagement ring choice, as the three stones are said to symbolise the past, present and the future of the relationship that you hope to share for a lifetime. The simplicity of the trilogy ring also appeals to many, with the three stones being incredibly elegant and flattering on the finger.
Five stone rings are another very traditional option and these rings were favoured in the Victorian and Edwardian era. Five stone antique and vintage gemstone rings are said to symbolise the phases of relationships; friendship, courtship, dating, relationship and marriage. They are favoured by many as they spread across the whole finger, and usually sit so that only the gemstones are visible whilst being worn.
Cluster Style Rings
Cluster rings have long been a favoured style of engagement rings, and anything that’s good enough for the duchess of Cambridge is good enough for us! Although they are common, depending on the type of cluster ring that you opt for, you can find a ring which is as original and unique as your future bride! Some clusters feature delicate, dainty diamonds which are akin to the halo style, whereas some feature large diamonds, in extraordinary styles, complimenting and enhancing the beauty of the ring.
