Description

This fine antique Victorian Britannia standard silver sugar caster has an octagonal panelled baluster shaped form onto an octagonal spreading domed foot.

The lower portion of this plain sugar caster is embellished with a contemporary bright cut engraved crest depicting a lion’s paw erected and erased holding a star.

The rim of this impressive sugar caster is encompassed with an applied moulded border.

This Britannia silver* caster retains the original, fine and impressive hallmarked push fit cover, embellished with impressive pierced scrolling decoration in addition to an applied moulded border to the rim.

The cover is surmounted by an impressive sterling silver panelled baluster shaped finial.

The underside of this antique sugar caster bears the retailer’s mark ‘Clark, 20 Old Bond St W’.

* Britannia Silver - The Britannia silver standard of 958 (95.84% of fine silver), denoted by the icon of the seated Britannia holding an oval shield, was introduced by William III in 1697. This was to indicate the slightly higher standard of silver from sterling silver standard of 925 (92.5% of fine silver).

Date: 1897

Condition

This silver sugar caster is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent condition.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface have wear, in keeping with age; the maker’s mark is worn and illegible.

The full hallmarks to the cover, including the maker’s mark are all very clear.

Reflections in photography may detract from the true representation of this example of Victorian silverware.
