Description

This fine Victorian English cut glass and sterling silver mounted antique whiskey jug has a plain, subtly tapering cylindrical form.

The upper portion of the glass body is fitted with a fine and impressive sterling silver mount with a lower supporting girdle.

The hallmarked hinged cover is surmounted with a plain thumbpiece.

This antique whiskey jug is fitted with a narwhal tusk* handle with sterling silver sockets.

The base of this unusual jug is ornamented with star cut decoration to the underside.

Jugs incorporating tusk are rare to the market, especially those in such exceptional condition.

* A narwhal is a medium sized toothed Arctic whale, the male of the species being characterised by its single 2-3 metre long tusk. The tusk is actually an incisor tooth which projects in a left-handed helix from the narwhal's upper jaw.

Date: 1900

Condition

The mount of this antique jug is an exceptional gauge of silver.

This high quality jug is in exceptional presentation condition.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the mount and part hallmarks struck to the interior of the cover are very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of Victorian silver and glassware.
