Description

This exceptional antique Victorian English sterling silver and glass antique claret jug has a tapering cylindrical panelled form, onto a circular collet style foot.

The cylindrical neck of this impressive claret jug is fitted with an exceptional hallmarked sterling silver gilt mount embellished with chased floral and scrolling leaf decoration.

The decoration to the mount incorporates cast sterling silver gilt figural mask ornamentation to either side.

The lower portion of the mount is embellished with a pierced decorated scrolling leaf border in junction with the glass body.

The mount of this impressive Victorian claret jug is fitted with a hallmarked domed cover embellished with further chased leag ornamentation in a quatrefoil deisgn.

The cover is surmounted by an impressive sterling silver flame style finial.

The jug is fitted with a gilt handle ornamented with chased scrolling decoration to the upper portion in addition to a cast silver gilt mask to the lower terminal.

The tapering body of the jug is ornamented with alternating hobnail and plain panels accented with a star cut motif to the underside.

The claret jug is fitted to the original hinged oak presentation box which features brass fittings and a vacant rectangular silver cartouche to the exterior front cover.

The satin and velvet lined interior bears the retailer's mark 'Wathersten & Son, 12 Pall Mall, East London'.

Date: 1879

Condition

This antique claret jug is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

The wooden presentation case has slight wear to one corner of the base, as to be expected in keeping with age; but this does not affect the integrity of the box.

The chased decoration is all very sharp.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the mount and part hallmarks struck to the cover are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of antique Victorian silverware.
