Description

This fine antique Victorian cut glass and English sterling silver mounted claret jug has a tapering oval form to a spreading base.

The neck is fitted with a fine and impressive plain oval hallmarked sterling silver mount, retaining the original hallmarked hinged domed cover and fitted with a plain spout.

This Victorian claret jug is ornamented with a sterling silver snake handle, the body of which molds itself around the claret jug.

This fine and impressive handle has a planished finish and the snake's head is embellished with naturalistic bead eyes.

The body of this antique jug is embellished with hobnail cut decoration and ornamented with a star cut base.

This claret jug was made by John Thomas Heath & John Hartshorne Middleton, subsequently Hukin & Heath Ltd of Birmingham.

Date: 1896

Condition

The mount of this antique Victorian claret jug is a very good gauge of silver and fine quality.

This claret jug is in excellent presentation condition in keeping with age; there are a couple of small dings to the top of the sterling silver mount, and few minor nibbles to the glass hobnails, but these do not detract from the overall appearance and quality of this piece.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the mount and part hallmarks struck to the interior of the cover are very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of Victorian silverware.
