This fine antique Victorian English cut glass and sterling silver mounted claret jug
The cylindrical portion of the body is fitted with a fine shaped, pierced decorated sterling silver mount.
The upper portion of the silver mount is ornamented with bright cut engraved acanthus leaf and scroll decoration, the lower supporting girdle is plain and unembellished.
The hallmarked hinged domed cover is embellished with bright cut engraved scroll decoration and surmounted by a very impressive figural finial realistically modelled in the form of a Roman soldier wearing typical cuirass armour and holding a staff and a vacant shield shaped cartouche.
This fine claret jug has an acanthus leaf decorated cast spout.
This Victorian claret jug has a shaped sterling silver handle ornamented with bright cut engraved flower and leaf decoration and scrolling terminals.
The lower bulbous portion of the cut glass
The heavily cut glass base of this unusual jug is ornamented with a large star cut decoration to the underside.
Condition
The mount of this antique claret jug is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent presentation condition.
There is minor wear to the underside of the base, and surface blemishes to the glass and silver mount as to be expected.
The interior of the claret jug has been professionally cleaned.
