A fine, impressive and unusual antique German silver sugar box modelled in the form of a cat; part of our silverware collection

Description

This fine German silver sugar box has been realistically modelled in the form of a cat.

The surface of this piece of continental silver has been finely chased to reproduce the definition of the cat's face and coat.

The head of this antique cat forms the push fit detachable cover.

This piece was originally silver gilt - this has worn with age in a sympathetic fashion to a mellow colour.

Condition

This antique German sugar box is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent condition.

The chased decoration is very sharp.

The hallmarks struck to the surface of the interior rim of the collar include unidentified hallmarks which may be pseudo-hallmarks often used on Hanau silver.

The tremolierstrich (zigzag line) used for silver assaying is clearly visible to the underside of this item.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of German silverware.
