Description

This fine antique German silver tureen has an oval rounded form onto a pedestal foot and navette shaped base.

The body of this German tureen is plain and embellished with a convex egg border to the incurved swept rim.

The lower portion of the body is encompassed with a band of stylised leaf decoration in junction with a gadroon decorated knop.

The upper portion of the pedestal is embellished with impressive chased floral sprays with elongated leaf dividers, all on a matt background.

The lower portion is encompassed with an egg and tongue decorated border to the rim.

This antique tureen retains the original push fit domed cover surmounted by the exceptional and original finial modelled in the form of a hooded figure standing with a child by an erect cornucopia.

The tureen is fitted with two exceptional scrolling handles, each with a leaf festoon decorated handpiece and a lion mask terminal.

This tureen is fitted to a plain navette shaped base embellished with engraved agricultural style designs and supported by four impressive paw and leaf decorated feet; the tureen secures to the base with two bolts to the underside.

The hallmarks to the underside of this impressive tureen include:

Maker’s mark: RC below a coronet (Georg Roth & Comp - Hanau silversmith and manufacturer)

Pseudo-Hallmarks: Unindentified*

* Hanau pseudo-marks were not registered with an administrative office and no records exist to check them against; the identification of some pseudo-marks are attributed to comparison and probability.

Condition

This antique German tureen is a very good gauge of silver, excellent quality and in excellent condition, in keeping with age.

There are some surface blemishes to the tureen, in keeping with age.

The chased decoration is very sharp and the engraved decoration is very crisp.

The German Hanau pseudo-marks struck to the underside of the base are all very clear.
