This Victorian Irish sterling silver bowl / cup has a large Monteith form onto a domed spreading foot.
The body of this antique bowl is ornamented with chased fluted decoration.
There is a large embossed oval vacant cartouche to the front and reverse sides, flanked by embossed scrolls and chased stylised leaf decoration.
The large cast handles are fashioned in the form of lion's masks, grasping a plain articulated drop-ring handle.
The shaped rim of this antique Monteith bowl is embellished with applied scroll decoration accented with female mask motifs.
The foot of this large bowl is ornamented with a broad band of gadroon decoration.
This impressive Victorian Monteith bowl retains its original gilt interior and is an exceptional example of its type.
Condition
This Irish sterling silver Monteith bowl is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition.
The original gilt interior shows some signs of wear in keeping with age.
The applied and chased and embossed decoration remains very sharp.
Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the bowl are all very clear.
