Description

These exceptional antique Victorian old Sheffield plate* wine coolers have a tapering panelled flared form.

These antique wine coolers are ornamented with inset silver panels to both sides of each piece to allow engraving; this was normal practice with many old Sheffield plate items and can be identified in the images and video.

One panel to each wine cooler is embellished with a crest displaying a mailed gauntlet for the right hand, fist clenched, palm to the front below the motto 'Dum Spiro Spero' - While I breathe, I hope.

The rim of these antique wine coolers has a flared shaped form.

Each wine cooler is fitted with two fine and impressive scroll decorated handles ornamented acanthus leaf decorated terminals.

Both pieces retain the original impressive detachable feet.

Each foot has a flared shell design, with four overlapping divisions embellished with incurved edges.

These antique wine coolers retain the original removable liners.

* Old Sheffield Plate is the process of fusing a layer of silver on to a layer of copper. The process was discovered by Thomas Boulsover in 1742. Old Sheffield plate is highly sought after due to it's rareity and age - it was superceded by cheaper electroplate in the early 1840's.

Date: 1848
