Description

This fine antique Victorian sterling silver tea and coffee service / set consists of a spirit kettle, teapot, coffee pot, cream jug, sugar bowl and tray.

The pieces of this service have a circular lamp style form, modelled in the Queen Anne style, onto a circular spreading domed foot.

The upper portion of the body has a waisted form with a shaped rim.

The shoulders of each piece are encircled with a fine and impressive gadroon style border.

The plain portion of the body is embellished to one side with a bright cut engraved crest depicting issuing out of flames an arm couped at the elbow erect, holding in the hand an eagle's leg erased at the thigh.

The lower portion of the body of each piece is embellished with embossed fluted decoration.

The spirit kettle, coffee pot and teapot retain the original domed hinged hallmarked covers, which feature fluted decoration over the domed portion.

Each cover retains the original carved fluted painted wood and sterling silver topped bun style finial.

The spirit kettle, teapot and coffee pot have fine and impressive swan necked spouts ornamented to the underside with fluted decoration.

The teapot and coffee pot retain the impressive original plain angular carved painted wood handles with scroll style thumbpieces.

The large spirit kettle has a shaped carved painted wood handle.

This fine and impressive kettle is supported on the original hallmarked detachable four-legged stand which retains the two original chased decorated locking pins and associated security chains.

The unembellished stand is fitted with four impressive scrolling legs with shell decorated hoof style feet.

The stand retains the original detachable, plain circular, hallmarked spirit burner.

The cream jug and sugar bowl are fitted with sterling silver reed decorated angular handles.

Both the cream jug and sugar bowl retain the original gilt interior.

The pieces of this fine tea and coffee service are presented on an exceptional matching gallery tray.

The tray has a plain oval form with a fine and impressive hallmarked gallery.

The deep gallery incorporates two inset oval handles and is ornamented with vertical pale and interlacing arch pierced decoration.

The rim of the tray is embellished with a reed decorated border.

The surface of the tray is ornamented with the same original contemporary bright cut engraved crest as the tea set above the inscription:

‘Presented to Thomas Arthur King,

on his coming of age,

by neighbours and friends of his parents,

Mr & Mrs John Kind,

Stratton,

1st January 1894’

This antique tea set is fitted to the original fine and impressive oak box with lift up lid and brass carrying handles.

This substantial box* has a blue felt lined interior.

Date: 1893

Condition

All the components of this tea and coffee set are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in excellent presentation condition.

There are some natural fire marks to the surface of each piece in keeping with age; this does not detract from the aesthetic appearance of the service.

The chased decoration to each piece is very sharp and the bright cut engraved decoration is very crisp.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the each piece and part hallmarks to the covers are all very clear.

The box is in excellent presentation condition in keeping with age, the outer box has been professionally re-polished by a cabinet maker.

There are some minor blemishes to the felt interior of the box.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these pieces of Victorian silverware.
