Description


This exceptional antique Japanese pure silver bowl has a circular rounded form to a plain collet foot.


This bowl has a double skin, as to be expected for this type of silverware.


The anterior surface of the bowl is ornamented with embossed, chased and applied decoration in relief depicting an iconic oriental dragon amidst clouds, with further cloud designs encircling the shaped rim.


The interior skin of this fine example of Japanese silverware is plain and unembellished.


The hallmarks struck to the underside of this impressive bowl include:

Retailer’s mark: Musashiya*

City mark: Yokohama, Japan

Silver quality/purity mark: Jungin character mark (pure silver, 1000/1000)

Character marks: Untraced


* Musashiya is a pre-eminent retailer during the Meiji era, operated by Ozeki Yahei and Sadajiro. The Yokohama branch was established after the Yokohama port opened in 1859.


Condition


This antique bowl is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

The decoration to the body of this piece is very sharp.

Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the bowl are all very clear.


Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of antique silverware.
