A fine and impressive pair of antique Victorian cut glass and sterling silver mounted claret jugs; part of our silverware collection
Description
These fine antique Victorian cut glass and sterling silver mounted claret jugs have a gourd shaped form onto a circular shaped edged foot.
The hobnail cut glass bodies have been individually hand blown and therefore vary slightly in shape.
Each claret jug has sterling silver mount and handle.
The mounts are embellished with chased mask, scrolling leaf, rope twist and cornucopia decoration.
The rope twist decoration is repeated around the rim and spout.
A laurel garland ornaments the fluted decorated spout.
These fine claret jugs are fitted with a hinged hallmarked domed cover surmounted by cast cherubesque figural detachable finials, secured to the cover via the original hallmarked wingnuts.
The impressive knopped scroll handles are embellished with rope twist, flower and leaf decoration including a leaf decorated thumbpiece.
The shaped upper handle sockets are ornamented with leaf decoration as are the lower terminals to a lesser extent.
These antique claret jug mounts and covers have gilt interiors.
Condition
These Victorian cut glass claret jugs are fitted with exceptional gauge silver mounts.
There are very minor nibbles to the glass bodies, but in general, the claret jugs and mounts are in excellent condition.
Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the mounts are clear, apart from one maker's mark, which is slightly rubbed.
Part hallmarks, as expected, struck to the interior of the cover and to the surface of each finial are all clear.
Reflections in photography may detract from the true representation of these items.
