Description

This exceptional antique pair of Indian Colonial silver presentation cups/vases has a campania shaped form supported by a pedestal and circular foot.

The body of each vessel is embellished with a contemporary engraved presentation inscription to one side.

The inscription to one cup reads ‘Fanny Catherine Dunseley Macrae, the Gift of her affectionate Godfather and Godmother, Richard and Fanny Ouseley’.

The second cup displays ‘To Charles Colin Macrae, on the 16th August 1844 the first anniversary of his Birthday, the gift of his affectionate Friends Fanny and Richard Ouseley’ to one side and bears a crest of a cubit arm grasping a sword above a coat of arms and motto ‘Fortitudine - With fortitude’* to the other side.

Each piece has two fine and impressive handles naturalistically modelled in the form of a two cordons extending from a grapevine trunk accented with grape and leaf decorated terminals.

These Indian colonial silver vases retain the original plain domed push fit covers encircled with fine and impressive chased decorated grape and foliate ornamentation to the shaped rims.

The covers are each surmounted with the original silver finials depicting a stemmed grape cluster and foliate ornamentation to one and a convolvulus style floral and foliate design to the other.

The pedestal of each item is realistically modelled in the form of interlacing grape vines terminating with a circular spreading foot embellished with further impressive chased decorated grape, foliate and tendril decoration.

These impressive presentation cups are an exceptional and unusual example of their type.

* This crest, coat of arms and motto pertain to the Scottish clan MacRae/Macrae, from the Gaelic name Mac Rath
