SOLD - Pair of Sterling Silver Chamber Candlesticks - Antique George III

Description

These fine antique George III sterling silver chamber candlesticks (chambersticks) have a plain circular form with a knopped stem and bell shaped capital.

The wax pan of each candlestick is ornamented with an engraved crest depicting on a mount a stag lodged regardant, attired, gorged with a chaplet of laural and vulned on the shoulder below a marquess coronet*.

Both antique chambersticks retain the original detachable hallmarked sconces and the original detachable hallmarked snuffers.

The snuffers have a conical form and are surmounted by simplified urn style finials.

The rims of the wax pans, snuffers and sconces have impressive gadroon decorated borders.

One side of each snuffer and the surface of the sconces are ornamented with the same engraved crest as the wax pans.

Both antique chambersticks are fitted with a shaped handle featuring a plain thumbpiece.

The underside of each exceptional chamberstick bears the original scratch weight and numbering ‘No.5’ and ‘No.6’; these would have been part of a very important set which will have been apportioned amongst the family over the course of time.

The scratch weight of each candlestick is 13.5 troy ounces; as to be expected the measured weight has subtly diminished in keeping with age to 13.1 and 13 troy ounces.

These fine Georgian chambersticks with original sconces and snuffers are fine examples of their type; it is rare to find such a pair that retain all the original components of such an exceptional gauge.

* This crest pertains to the Marquess Cornwallis; the marquesssate became extinct on August 9th 1823 when Charles Viscount Brome, the 2nd Marquess Cornwallis died and only the Earldom of Cornwallis continued.

Date: 1813

Condition

These antique chambersticks are an exceptional gauge of silver and exceptional quality.

The chamber candlesticks have some surface blemishes as expected with such original items from this period.

These impressive pieces may be considered in excellent presentation condition.

The engraved decoration to each component is very sharp.

Full hallmarks struck to the underside of each wax pan and to the surface of each sconce and snuffer and are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these pieces of antique silverware.
