Description


These impressive antique George III sterling silver salvers each have a circular form supported by three Regency style feet.


The surface of the salver is embellished with flat chased floral, leaf and vine decoration surrounding a central shaped circular cartouche.


The cartouche to each salver displays an impressive marital coat of arms* featuring a shield with one half depicting three bull's heads erased azure armed or, and the other half depicting a dophin embowed proper over an azure tincture.


The shield is surmounted by a bright cut engraved shell motif with a crest of a bull (buffalo) passant proper above.


Underneath the coat of arms is the engraved motto 'Vincit Amor Patriae' which translates from Latin as 'Love of Country Prevails'.


The salvers are ornamented with fine applied wild rose, leaf and berry decorated borders each accented with three shell designs.


The fine and impressive Regency style feet are embellished with circular wild rose motifs and leaf decoration.


This is an exceptional pair of salvers made by the renowned London silversmith, Benjamin Smith.


* These armourial bearings commemorate the marriage of William James James, of Barrock, Cumberland, to Fanny, daughter of William Calton Rutson of Allerton, Lancashire on 16th February 1816.

Condition


These antique salvers are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The applied decorated border is very sharp and the flat chased decoration is very crisp.

Full hallmarks struck to the underside of both salvers are very clear.
