SOLD - Scottish Sterling Silver and Granite ‘Curling Stone’ Inkwell - Antique Circa 1900

Description

This fine and unusual, antique granite and Scottish sterling silver mounted inkwell has been realistically modelled in the form of a curling stone (or 'rock', as known in North American curling).

The impressive Peterhead red granite* body of the inkwell has a plain rounded cylindrical form.

The upper portion of the granite inkwell is fitted with a fine and impressive mount and hinged cover reflecting the tradition style of the handle of a curling stone.

The sterling silver handle retains the original carved ivory handpiece.

The hinged cover pivots open to allow access to the removable glass liner.

This impressive inkwell was crafted by the provincial Inverness silversmith Fraser Ferguson & McBean.

*Peterhead granite is one of the most important Aberdeenshire granites. This granite may be red or blue in colour. The red variety is better known and used for ornamental and monumental work.

Condition

The silver mount of this antique granite inkwell is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

The Scottish granite is in perfect condition.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the cover are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this antique Scottish piece.
