SOLD - Sterling Silver Butter Dishes - Antique George III

Description

These impressive antique George III sterling silver butter dishes have a scallop shell shaped form.

The impressive shaped handpiece/handle of each dish represents what would be the umbo of the natural shell.

Each handpiece is embellished with fine applied reed decorated border paralleling the shaped rim, and ornamented with an impressive contemporary bright cut engraved crest depicting between two branches a lion’s head erased and collared.

These fine pieces of antique silverware are each supported by three applied nautilus style shell feet.

Date: 1795

Condition

These antique butter shells are a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent condition.

The bright cut engraved decoration is very sharp.

Full hallmarks struck to the underside of each item show signs of wear due to their location and in keeping with age; these all remain legible.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these examples of Georgian silverware.
