Description

The pieces of this fine and comprehensive George IV sterling silver canteen service for twelve persons have been crafted in the Kings pattern style.

Each item is embellished with a union shell and diamond heel to the reverse.

To the reverse surface of the forks and front surface of the spoons is an interesting bright cut engraved crest depicting a viscount’s coronet and a triple towered tower with plumes issuing from the top, superimposed with a crook.

The knives are un-crested.

This impressive service is a 'straight'* service, which is very hard to find from this period.

The knife handles are sterling silver and the blades stainless steel.

This comprehensive flatware service consists of:

Basic Service:
12 Table knives
12 Table forks
12 Table spoons
12 Dessert knives
12 Dessert forks
12 Dessert spoons
12 Teaspoons
Additional Pieces:
Soup ladle
Pair gravy spoons
Fish slice
Four sauce ladles
Pair salt spoons

This impressive canteen is fitted to a fine mahogany lift up lid and well, two drawer canteen box with brass fittings; including carry and drawer handles, hinges and a vacant shaped cartouche.

PLEASE NOTE: *"Straight" means all the pieces are made by the same maker in the same year.

Predominately all antique silver canteens have replacement knives as the originals have not stood the test of time, as is the case with this canteen.

Date: 1824

Condition

The pieces of this impressive antique canteen are a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent presentation condition.

The bowls of the spoons and fork tines are all in excellent condition with little sign of wear; all are in fine condition in keeping with age.

Full hallmarks struck to the reverse of each piece are all very clear; some hallmarks struck to the dessert spoons are slightly rubbed as not as deeply struck.

The mahogany canteen box has been professionally polished by a cabinet maker and is in excellent condition.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this fine and impressive canteen.
