Description

This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver card case has a rectangular shaped form.

The anterior surface of this antique card case is embellished with fine and impressive chased and embossed scrolling leaf and floral decoration on a matt background.

The anterior surface of the case incorporates the Royal Exchange* of London, England depicted in relief; this is a highly desirable and collectable scene.

The decoration to the reverse of the case incorporates a shaped cartouche displaying the contemporary engraved initials ‘MC’.

The shaped sides of this piece are embellished with plain scrolling borders.

This antique silver card case is fitted with a hinged cover ornamented with a continuation of scrolling leaf and foliate designs on a matt background.

* The original Royal Exchange was built in the 16th century and was twice destroyed, once by the Great Fire of London and again by fire in 1838. The depicted scene commemorates the building which adheres to the original layout which was constructed by William Tite in the 1840s, reopening in 1844.

Date: 1846
