Description

This fine antique William IV sterling silver christening mug has a campania shaped form to a domed spreading foot.

The body of the mug is embellished with a fine and impressive chased and applied decoration depicting a fenced country scene with chickens and dogs to the foreground.

The decoration to the body incorporates a slightly later inscription ‘Presented at the Court Leet of the Manor of Fontaiell Magua, held Nov 2nd 1848, by the Jurymen and Officers to George Terry Short, as a token of their appreciation of his constant attendances at the said Court during a period of Fifty Years.’ above the country scene.

The lower bulbous portion of the body bears a further later engraved inscription ‘Sir Richard Plumptre Glyn, Baronet, Lord of the Manor. George Evans, Steward’.

The mug is fitted with a fine and impressive S scroll handle ornamented with a scrolling leaf decorated thumbpiece and scrolling upper and lower terminals.

The subtly octofoil shaped foot of the mug is encircled with a scrolling border accented with a floral motif to each incurve.

This impressive christening mug, crafted by the renowned London silversmith Joseph Angell I, is highly desirable due to its shape and embellished scene.
