Description

This unusual antique Victorian sterling silver combination vinaigrette / scent bottle is realistically modelled in the form of a curved hunting horn.

The main body of the horn and cover of the scent are embellished with applied plain broad girdles, which provide anchor points for the original link chain.

The ‘mouth piece’ end of the horn retains the original hallmarked screw fit cover to the scent bottle.

The ‘bell’ of the horn is fitted with a hallmarked hinged cover, which when opened reveals the vinaigrette with the original hinged grille and gilt interior.

The gilded grille is ornamented with a bright cut engraved and pierced decorated bordered scroll and leaf design.

This sterling silver design (Parcel No.10) was registered on the 22nd June 1870 by S Mordan & Co in London.

This fine example of Victorian silverware is fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with satin and velvet lined interior and a push fit catch.

This sterling silver combination vinaigrette / scent bottle, which is a large example of its type, was crafted by the renowned London silversmiths Sampson Mordan & Co.

Date: 1872

Condition

This antique combination vinaigrette / scent bottle is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in presentation condition.

The box is in excellent condition in keeping with age.

Full hallmarks to the surface of the body, and part hallmarks, including registration lozenge to the interior of the vinaigrette cover, hinged grille and anterior surface of the scent bottle cover are all clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from this fine example of Victorian silverware.
