SOLD - Sterling Silver Compass - Antique Victorian

This fine antique Victorian sterling silver air damped compass has a circular shaped form in a pocket watch style.

The reverse surface of the compass is plain and unembellished.

The outer rim of the compass has serrated style borders in order to proffer a comfortable grip.

The compass has a fine and impressive mother of pearl dial coloured to the ‘Northern’ portion.

The dial displays cardinal and intermediate marks with triangular degree marks around the outer edge.

The dial is further embellished with the inscription ‘Watson Bros, Observatory House, Cockspur St, SW’*.

The compass action is released by a pull fit catch, which can be closed to avoid the compass dial moving and becoming damaged when in transit.

This impressive example of collectable Victorian silverware is fitted with a hallmarked, articulated ring loop attachment.

* Watson Brothers, Thomas and Arthur Henry Watson, were recorded as being opticians as well as gun and rifle manufacturers. They produced items of ‘fieldware’ including cameras, binoculars and compasses. Watson Bros was appointed Gunmakers to His Imperial Majesty The Sultan of Turkey and Gunmakers to the Shah of Persia.

Date: 1890

This antique sterling silver compass is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent presentation condition.

Full hallmarks struck to the reverse surface of the compass, and part hallmarks struck to the ring attachment are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of antique Victorian silverware.

Height to top of ring 7.5cm/3”

Diameter 5.2cm/2”
