Description

This fine antique Edwardian sterling silver cream jug and associated sugar bowl have subtle quatrefoil shaped form.

The surface of each piece is plain and unembellished.

Both pieces are ornamented with a gadroon decorated rim.

The cream jug and sugar bowl are fitted with angular sterling silver handles and supported with four tri-lobed feet in the Art Nouveau style.

Although these items of teaware display the London Assay Office hallmarks, they were both made by the provincial Newcastle silversmiths Reid & Sons. (The Newcastle Assay Office closed in 1884, hence the London Assay Office hallmark).

Date: 1909

Condition

Both pieces of this antique cream and sugar set are a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent condition.

The cream jug and sugar bowl have been professionally polished and are in presentation condition.

The decoration to the borders is very sharp.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of each piece are very clear; the maker’s mark to the sugar bowl is rubbed and to the cream jug is slightly rubbed but legible.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these examples of Edwardian silverware.
