Description

This fine antique Victorian English sterling silver table ornament is modelled in the form of a crucifix to a knopped stem onto a swept panelled hexafoil shaped spreading base.

The anterior surface of the cross is embellished with a cast and applied figure of Jesus below bright cut engraved Latin initials ‘INRI’*.

The stipe and crosspiece of the cross have rounded tri-lobed terminals ornamented with bright cut engraved quatrefoil motifs.

The reverse of the cross is plain an unembellished apart from the rivet ornamentation to Jesus’ hands and feet which is visible to both surfaces.

* INRI - Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum (Jesus Nazarenus Rex Judaeorum) is the inscription placed above Christ's head during the Crucifixion by Pontius Pilate (John 19:19)

Date: 1897

Condition

This antique sterling silver ornament is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in exceptional condition.

The crucifix has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition.

The engraved decoration is very crisp and very sharp.

Full hallmarks struck to the base and part hallmarks to the reverse surface of the cross are all very clear.
