Description

This fine antique Victorian sterling silver four piece tea and coffee service/set consists of a coffee pot, teapot, cream jug and sugar bowl.

The pieces of this tea and coffee set have a panelled baluster shaped form on to a rounded hexafoil shaped swept foot.

The body of each piece is embellished with bright cut engraved stylised strapwork bordered panels depicting ornamental fruit arrangements on elevated platforms.

The decoration to the body of each item incorporates a vacant cartouche to either side.

The lower portion and subpanels of each piece is embellished with further bright cut engraved stylised interlacing strapwork decoration.

The shaped rim of each piece is ornamented with an applied scroll decorated border accented with a suspended lobed motif to each incurve.

The teapot and coffee pot are both fitted with hinged domed panelled covers, embellished with further bright cut engraved strapwork decoration.

Both covers retain the impressive original hallmarked baluster style finials ornamented with simplified bright cut engraved designs.

The teapot, coffee pot, cream jug and sugar bowl are all fitted with C scroll handles with bifurcating scrolling lower sockets.

Each handle is embellished with an applied scrolling strapwork style thumbpiece.

The teapot and coffee pot have impressive swan necked spouts ornamented to the lip with a similar strapwork design as that to the thumbpieces.

This impressive tea and coffee set was crafted by the renowned London silversmiths Edward & John Barnard.

Date: 1857

Condition

This antique tea and coffee service is an exceptional gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent condition.

The bright cut engraved decoration is all very crisp.

Full hallmarks struck to the underside of each piece, and part hallmarks to the interior of each cover and finial, as expected, are all very clear.

Reflections in photography may detract from the true representation of these examples of antique teaware.
