Description

This very rare antique Edwardian English sterling silver bottle coaster/jardinière has a hexagonal form in the Arts and Crafts style.

The overall surface of each panel has a planished finish in addition to Arts and Crafts style rivet ornamentation.

The front panel is embellished with embossed and applied decoration depicting George and the Dragon and the latin words 'Quo Fata Vocant' - Wither the fates call *.

To either side are the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers emblems "the fusels".

The upper rim of this impressive bottle coaster is ornamented with an applied undulating scrolling leaf border accented with a floral motif to the centre of each panel.

This fine piece of antique silverware was crafted by the Newcastle Guild of Handicrafts and assayed in Birmingham.

Full details of the makers "Newcastle Guild of Handicrafts" can be supplied upon request

* As 'Quo Fata Vocant' is the motto of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, and the 5th Regiment of Foot (Northumberland Fusiliers) was one of the 'Six Old Corps', which entitled it to use the badge of St George killing the dragon on its regimental colours, suggests that this piece was made either for the regiment or an officer of the regiment.

Date: 1906

Condition

This antique jardiniere is a very good gauge of silver, very good quality and in excellent condition.
