SOLD - Sterling Silver Lemon Strainer - Antique George II

This fine antique early George II English sterling silver lemon strainer has a plain circular rounded form.

The bowl of the lemon strainer is embellished with pierced decorated circular geometric motifs with an applied moulded border to the rim.

This lemon strainer is fitted with a two impressive cut work decorated handles embellished with a contemporary bright cut engraved crest of a demi-griffin holding between its claws a mullet to one, and a rooster to the other.

This fine example of early Georgian silverware, crafted by Richard Gurney and Thomas Cook, has a very good colour and patination*.

*Patination or Patina is a subtle colouration or tarnish which forms on the surface of some metals, produced by oxidation or other chemical processes. A good patina proffers an aesthetically pleasing look.

Date: 1731

This antique lemon strainer is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent presentation condition.

The bright cut engraved hallmarks are very crisp.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the bowl are as clear as could be expected considering where they are struck and in keeping with age.

Lion passant mark to the reverse of one handle is very clear.

Reflections in photography may detract from the true representation of this Georgian silverware.

Diameter of bowl 8.1cm/3.2"

Length across handles 15.2 cm/6"
