Description

This impressive antique George IV sterling silver rattle is a fine example of its type.

The rattle retains the original coral handle and original independently articulated bells which are suspended form a scalloped edged, pierced decorated skirt.

The sterling silver body of the rattle has a circular compressed form embellished with ribbed and chased decoration.

The bells are embellished with chased and pierced decoration.

The rattle incorporates a whistle which is engraved with the initials 'JSH' and makers mark to the underside.

The whistle and hallmarked silver coral mount are encircled with two plain girdles, ornamented on either side with ribbed and chased decoration.

Date: 1825

Condition

This antique rattle is a good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent, presentation condition.

The chased decoration is very sharp.

The bells have some bruises as expected, in keeping with age.

The rattle is however a very good, and complete example of its type -many such items do not stand the test of time.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the rattle are very clear.

Reflections in photography may detract from the true representation of this item.
