Description


This fine antique Victorian sterling silver three piece bachelor tea set/service consists of a teapot, cream jug and sugar bowl.


Each piece of this set has an incurved, oil can shaped form.


The lower portion of each component is encompassed with a fine and impressive scrolling leaf decorated border accented with a central quatrefoil floral motif.


The upper portions are embellished with broad scalloped borders incorporating floral motifs with elevated stylised leaf ornamentations.


The decoration to the body of each piece incorporates fine and impressive bright cut engraved stylised leaf festoons with floral designs and pensile arrays to the protruding portions.


Either side of each piece is further ornamented with an oval vacant bright cut engraved cartouche.


The teapot is fitted with a flush hinged hallmarked cover which retains the original ivory and silver oval shaped finial; the flush hinge indicates the fine quality of this service.


The cover is further encompassed with scrolling leaf designs in junction with the plateaued portion of the body.


The impressive antique teapot has a plain straight tapered spout embellished with leaf festoons suspended from the tip of the spout, identical to that of the body.


The teapot if fitted with the original carved ivory C shaped handle, with a plain scrolling thumbpiece and scrolling sterling silver sockets.


The cream jug and sugar bowl are fitted with C shaped sterling silver handles, matching the design of the ivory teapot handle.


The cream jug and sugar bowl have gilded interiors.


This tea set is accompanied by the original hallmarked sugar tongs, ornamented with bright cut engraved leaf and floral ornamentation.


This Victorian bachelor tea set retains the original fine and impressive hinged leatherette box with a satin and velvet lined interior and a push fit catch.


The interior of the presentation box cover features the Royal coronet and initials 'VR' above the retailer's mark By Appointment, Elkington & Co.

Condition


This antique tea service is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

The original box is in presentation condition, in keeping with age.

There is natural crazing to the ivory handle and finial of the teapot, as to be expected, in keeping with age.

The bright cut engraved decoration is all very crisp.

Full hallmarks struck to the underside of each piece and the interior of the tongs in addition to the part hallmark to the interior of the teapot cover are all very clear.


Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these examples of Victorian silverware.
