SOLD - Sterling Silver Wager Cup - Antique Victorian

Description

This fine antique Victorian sterling silver wager cup* has been realistically modelled in the form of a woman in an upright stance dressed in Elizabethan attire.

The female’s garments are embellished with chased decoration replicating the fabric's patterns and textures, incorporating collet set coloured glass (gem style) ornamentation to the wide skirt, waisted bodice and cuffs.

To one side the woman’s arm is subtly elevated grasping in the hand three leaves enveloping a central stemmed flower ornamented to the centre with a single faceted red glass ‘gem’.

The underside of the woman’s skirt forms a tapering cylindrical drinking vessel.

This Victorian cup retains the original gilded interior.

The hallmarks struck to the rim of this impressive cup include:

Importer's mark: ETB (Edwin Thompson Bryant)

Silver quality/purity mark: Lion passant, 930** (sterling)

Assay mark: Leopard head (London, England)

Import date mark: C (1898)

Additional mark: F (foreign manufacture mark)

* This cup is a variation on the traditional wager cup created in the sixteenth century for use at wedding banquets; these cups consist of a figure holding a gimbal-type drinking cup above their head in addition to the larger cup to the underside of the skirt.

** The country of origin hallmarked this item with the standard mark 930 and once imported into Britain the silver purity was tested and hallmarks struck reaffirming the silver is a minimum of sterling standard.

Date: 1898

Condition

This antique wager cup is an exceptional gauge of silver, fine quality and in exceptional presentation condition.

The chased decoration is very sharp.

Full import hallmarks and 930 standard mark struck to the surface of the skirt are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of Victorian silverware.
