Description

This fine antique Victorian sterling silver and ivory presentation trowel has a rounded triangle shaped blade.

The anterior face of the blade is embellished with impressive bright cut engraved stylised leaf decorated border paralleling the triangular portion of the blade and terminating with interlacing scrolling leaf designs.

The ornamentation to the blade incorporates the contemporary engraved presentation inscription:

‘Presented to Mrs W D Cruddas of Haughton Castle, Northumberland, on the Occasion of laying The Foundation Stone of Erskine Presbyterian Church of England, Newcastle-on-Tyne, 3rd Jany 1898. Badenoch & Bruce, Architects’.

The reverse of the blade is plain and unembellished.

The trowel is fitted with fine and impressive shaped carved oval, tapering ivory handle to a hallmarked sterling silver ferrule and organic shaped chased decorated tri-lobed bolster.

This impressive Victorian trowel is fitted to the original hinged leatherette presentation box with satin and velvet lined interior, securing with a push fit catch.

Date: 1897

Condition

This antique presentation trowel is an exceptional gauge of silver, fine quality and in exceptional condition.

The trowel has been professionally polished and is in presentation condition.

The box is also in presentation condition, in keeping with age.

The chased decoration is very sharp and the bright cut engraved decoration is all very crisp.

Full hallmarks struck to the reverse of the blade and part hallmarks to the ferrule are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.

Reflections in photography may detract from the true representation of this piece of Victorian silverware.
