Description

This fine antique Victorian sterling silver and ivory presentation trowel has a rounded triangle shaped blade.

The anterior face of the blade is embellished with impressive bright cut engraved geometric border paralleling the triangular portion of the blade and terminating with scrolling leaf ornamentation encompassing a floral rosette style motif.

The ornamentation to the blade incorporates the contemporary engraved presentation inscription:

‘Presented to George Duncan Esqre F.R.G.S. of Coldrey, Hampshire and 45 Gordon Square, London, on laying the Foundation Stone of the Jesmond Presbyterian Church of England, Newcastle Upon Tyne, 16th June 1887’.

The reverse of the blade is embellished with a single bright cut engraved bordered floral rosette design accented with a fleur-de-lis motif in addition to a simplified border paralleling the shape of the blade.

This antique trowel retains the original fine and impressive shaped carved waisted ivory handle ornamented with a band of stylised leaf border above a band of interlacing decoration.

The handle is fitted to an impressive shaped chased leaf decorated bolster accented with ribbed ornamentation and a scalloped border.

This impressive Victorian trowel is fitted to the original hinged leatherette presentation box with satin and velvet lined interior.

Date: 1873

Condition

This antique trowel is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent presentation condition.

The cover to the box has subtly contorted and no longer sits flush when closed and the original catch is not operational; this impressive box can be considered in excellent presentation condition, in keeping with age.

The chased decoration is very sharp and the bright cut engraved decoration is very crisp.

Full hallmarks struck to the reverse of the blade are all very clear.

Reflections in photography may detract from the true representation of this piece of Victorian silverware.

Dimensions

Length 29.4cm/11.6"
