This fine antique Victorian Scottish silver Cellini style claret jug has an ewer shaped form onto a circular pedestal foot.
The body, foot and neck of the claret jug are embellished with applied and chased decoration depicting woodland flora and fauna, further ornamented with strapwork framed chased decorated masks, incorporating a vacant bordered oval cartouche.
The jug is further embellished with chased mask and scroll decoration to the underside of the pouring lip and to the hinged cover.
This large fine jug is fitted with an impressive figurehead ornamented C scroll handle.
The circular pedestal foot is embellished with two bands of embossed and chased mask, strapwork and laurel decoration.
Condition
This antique claret jug is a very good of silver, fine quality and in excellent presentation condition.
The chased decoration is very sharp.
Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the pouring lip and part hallmarks struck to the cover are very clear.
The maker's mark has been overstruck; which was not an unusual practice.
Reflections in photography may detract from the true representation of this piece of Victorian silverware .
