Description

These antique George II sterling silver cast candlesticks have a classical English form.

The cylindrical capital of each candlestick is supported by a waisted knopped octagonal column to a domed bell shaped lower portion onto a sunken well and plain square base.

Each hallmarked capital is encircled with an applied girdle amidst two bands of gadroon decoration.

The chamfered knops to the upper portion of the columns are ornamented with further gadroon decoration.

The knops to the lower portion of the columns and the sunken wells are plain.

The bell shaped portion of the column is encircled with an applied lobed design.

The Georgian candlesticks retain the original push fit hallmarked plain flared square sconces ornamented with further gadroon decoration to the rims.

The square bases are embellished with a band of impressive gadroon decoration above the plain collet style rim.

These cast sterling silver candlesticks do not have weighted bases.

Candlesticks crafted in this classical form are highly desirable.

These Georgian candlesticks are exceptional original examples of their type.

Date: 1758

Condition

These antique candlesticks are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The gadroon and applied decoration is all very sharp.

Full hallmarks struck to the underside of each candlestick are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply and sharply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.

The lion passant to the surface of the capitals and part hallmarks to the sleeve of each sconce are all clear in keeping with age.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these examples of Georgian silverware.
