Description

These exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver wine coasters have a plain cylindrical form.

The surface of each coaster is embellished with pierced decorated bird designs amidst scrolling branches and vertical pales, all accented with engraved detailing.

The pierced decoration to each coaster incorporates a scrolling leaf bordered cartouche embellished with a contemporary bright cut engraved crest of an elephant.

Each antique coaster is encircled with applied thread decoration to the lower portion above the contemporary engraved initials 'T.C to I.W.C' and motto 'Amicitiae Virtutisque Ergo' - Therefore Power and Friendship.

The shaped, incurved upper rim of each coaster is encompassed with a paralleling applied gadroon decorated.

These Victorian wine coasters are fitted with the original and impressive turned stained pear wood bases.

Each coaster retains the original baize to the underside.

Condition

These antique Victorian wine coasters are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The surface of one base has a partial crack, this does not affect the ingreity of the piece.

The applied decoration is all very sharp and the engraved decoration is all very crisp.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of each coaster are clear; the nature of these coasters dictates the location of the hallmarks to the rim of the base. In many extant coasters, because of this, the hallmarks may become very worn and illegible. In this instance however, the hallmarks show signs of wear in keeping with age but remain legible.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these pieces of antique silverware.
