Description

The pieces of this unusual antique Victorian sterling silver four piece tea and coffee service have a gourd, Grecian style form onto a collet foot.

The teapot, coffee pot, cream jug and sugar bowl are embellished with a band of bright cut engraved Greek key decoration.

The lower portion for each piece is ornamented with impressive engraved acanthus leaf decoration.

The teapot, coffee pot and cream jug feature two bright cut engraved crests depicting a battlement tower alongside a beaked stork with the dexter claw resting upon a circular medallion with a lion rampant.

The crest sits above the motto 'Esse Quam Videri' which is translated as 'To be, rather than to seem to be'.

The coffee pot and teapot are fitted with flat hallmarked hinged covers embellished with bright cut engraved husk decorated border.

Both covers are surmounted by an impressive sterling silver finial in the form of a butterfly.

The coffee pot, teapot and cream jug are fitted with a plain handle with an impressive scroll decorated upper terminal.

The unusual sugar bowl is supported by a pedestal style foot.

The teapot was made by Samuel Smily at Goldsmiths Alliance Ltd, London in 1870.

The coffee pot, sugar bowl and cream jug were made by William Gough at Gough & Silvester, Birmingham in 1866.

Condition

The pieces of this antique tea and coffee service are a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent presentation condition.

There are some minor surface blemishes to these items of silverware, as would be expected in keeping with age. This does not however, detract from the fine quality of this service.

The bright cut engraved decoration is very crisp.

Full hallmarks are struck to the rim of the collet foot of each piece apart from the teapot, where the hallmarks are struck to the underside of the base.

Part hallmarks are struck to the handle and finial of the coffee pot and teapot.

All hallmarks are very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these examples of Victorian teaware.
