Description

This exceptional antique George III sterling silver cream jug has a panelled helmet shaped form onto a circular pedestal with a circular shaped spreading foot.

The surface of this impressive cream jug is embellished with bright cut engraved foliate and floral festoon designs suspended from a quatrefoil shaped motif to each incurve.

The body of the jug is further embellished with a bright cut engraved decorated vacant oval cartouche to either side, each suspended from a stylised ribbon bow design.

The cartouche to one side displays a contemporary bright cut engraved crest of a cubit arm erect holding in the hand a bunch of barley*, below the motto 'Et mea messis erit' - My harvest will also arrive; the other side remains vacant.

The upper portion is embellished with a band of bright cut engraved decoration below an applied reed decorated border.

This fine example of Georgian silverware is fitted with a narrow loop handle ornamented with plain applied moulded decoration.

The surface of the circular shaped foot is encompassed with a paralleling wrigglework border.

This exceptional jug retains the original gilt interior.

* This crest pertains to the Denney/Denny family.
