Description

This impressive antique George III sterling silver cream jug has a helmet shaped form onto a pedestal with a circular spreading foot and plain square base.

The body of the jug is embellished with the contemporary bright cut engraved initials ‘WAS’.

The upper portion of the body is ornamented with a band of bright cut engraved interlacing floral motifs amidst scalloped and undulating borders.

The rim of the body and circular spreading foot are encircled with reed decorated borders.

The surface of the foot and square base are embellished with further bright cut engraved and pin struck quatrefoil motifs.

This fine example of Georgian silverware is fitted with a narrow loop handle ornamented with plain applied moulded decoration.

This impressive cream jug was crafted by the renowned and collectable silversmiths Peter and Ann Bateman.

Date: 1791

Condition

This antique cream jug is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in exceptional condition, in keeping with age.

There is a pin head ding to one corner of the base and a few minor blemishes to the reed decoration; this does not detract from the aesthetically pleasing appearance of this item.

The bright cut engraved decoration is very crisp.

Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the square base are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this antique Georgian silverware.
