Description

This exceptional antique George III sterling silver gilt chalice cup has a plain bell shaped form onto a waisted knopped stem and octofoil domed spreading foot.

The drinking vessel of this example of Georgian silverware is plain and unembellished, apart from the hallmarks to the lower portion.

The knop to the upper portion of the stem is embellished with an embossed leaf and shell designs, above a band of grape clusters and simplified vine ornamentation.

The panelled stem of the chalice is embellished with segments of chased textures and terminate with further leaf ornamentation to the lower bulbous knop.

The upper portion of the large and impressive foot is embellished with a shaped band of chased wheat stalks and further fruiting vine designs, all on a matte background.

The foot is further ornamented with large scrolling designs segmented with tiered leaf motifs and incorporating four shaped cartouches; three cartouche remain vacant and the fourth bears a simplified engraved cross.

This exceptional Georgian goblet/chalice retains the original gilding.

Condition

This antique silver chalice cup is an exceptional gauge of silver for its type, exceptional quality and in excellent condition.

There is a minor opening to the upper knop, as can often be expected in keeping with age.

The chased and embossed decoration is all very sharp.

Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the chalice have wear in keeping with age and location; the first portion of the maker's mark has wear and is illegible.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of Georgian silverware.
