Description

This antique Edwardian sterling silver presentation cup has a plain rounded bell shaped form onto a circular spreading pedestal foot.

The body of this antique Art Nouveau cup is embellished with a bright cut engraved coat of arms, pertaining to the town Gateshead*, comprised of a crest of a goat's head erased, above an angular escutcheon with a gate tower and the motto ‘caput inter nubila condit’ - it's head is hidden in the clouds.

This cup is fitted with three impressive scrolling arms, embellished with Art Nouveau style shaped decorated sockets and bifurcating lower terminals.

This impressive presentation cup retains the original gilded interior.

* The coat of arms for Gateshead was changed in the 1830’s, replacing the goat’s head (from which Gateshead takes its name) with a gate tower displayed in a shield; during the mid-19th century the motto ‘caput inter nubila condit’ was added. Further changes occurred when Gateshead was incorporated into a new metropolitan borough in 1975 and a new armorial bearings was created and the motto altered to 'in unity, progress'

Date: 1910

This antique presentation piece is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent condition.
