Description

This fine antique George II sterling silver sugar caster has a plain baluster shaped form onto a circular domed foot.

The surface of the sugar caster is plain and embellished with a contemporary bright cut engraved crest.

The plain body of the caster is encircled with a plain applied girdle in addition to an applied moulded border to the rim.

This silver caster retains the original hallmarked push fit cover, embellished with alternating panels of pierced trellis decoration and scrolling stylised leaf designs.

The cover is surmounted with an impressive sterling silver urn shaped finial.

This exceptional piece of antique teaware was crafted by the renowned caster maker and London silversmith Samuel Wood.

Date: 1748

Condition

This antique sugar caster is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The bright cut engraved crest is very crisp.

Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the caster and part hallmarks, consisting of maker’s mark and lion passant, to the sleeve of the cover are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver.

Reflections in photography may detract from the true representation of this example of Georgian silverware.

Dimensions

Height to top of finial 17.2cm/6.8"

Diameter 7.2cm/2.8"

Diameter of foot 5.7cm/2.2"
