A fine antique Victorian English sterling silver wine jug in the Aesthetic style; part of our silverware collection
This fine Victorian sterling silver wine jug has a tapering cylindrical rounded ewer shaped form with a waisted neck.
The body of the jug is embellished with iconic Aesthetic style bright cut engraved Japanoiserie decoration depicting bamboo, birds, butterflies and a significant circular motif.
The motif has two concentric circles, the outer embellished with a repetitive design, and the inner depicting a male portrait.
The neck of the jug is encircled with two bands of stylised flower and leaf designs.
This fine antique jug is fitted with a hinged hallmarked shaped cover surmounted with an impressive cast ribbon tied wreath finial.
The surface of the cover is embellished with a bright cut engraved diagonal design and two motifs - one a tied scroll, the other a tasselled, closed fan.
The jug is fitted with a leaf and berry decorated handle.
This wine jug is a fine yet unusual example of its type.
This antique jug is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in exceptional condition.
The engraved decoration is very sharp.
Full hallmarks struck to the underside, and part hallmarks, as expected, struck to the interior of the cover and handle are all very clear.
Reflections in photography may detract from the true representation of this item.
