Description

This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver table lighter has been realistically modelled in the form of a lighthouse.

The swept body of the lighthouse is embellished with simplified engraved details reproducing the floors, windows, door and staircase.

The ornamentation to the body incorporates a central applied enamel Union Flag* encompassed with the contemporary engraved presentation inscription 'Naval Jubilee 1847-97, From an Old and Present, Dragon, Victory, Thetis, James Watt, Ant, Shannon, Icarus, Defence, Valiant, Swiftsure, Boadicea, Audacious, Imperieuse, Victory'**.

This impressive novelty silver table lighter retains the original hallmarked push fit cover ornamented with details replicating the large panelled light room; once removed this allows access to the wick.

The lighthouse surmounts an impressive cast circular foot ornamented with a rough rock pattern.

* The Union Flag displays a red cross on a white background and is derived from St George's Cross. This flag is used to represent the entire Kingdom of England, including Wales.

** This impressive list commemorates a wide variety of ships including: gunboats, armoured and protected cruisers, in addition to torpedo boat destroyers.
