This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver claret jug has a large plain ewer shaped form onto a circular spreading foot.
The body of the claret jug retains the original impressive hallmarked gilt overlaid fruiting vine decoration.
The fine cast gilt handle has been naturalistically modelled in the form of a vine branch accented with grape and leaf decoration.
The rim of the foot is embellished with the engraving ‘J Angell, Fecit 10 Strand’* .

This large and impressive claret jug is made by the renowned London silversmith Joseph Angell II .
*Joseph Angell Junior ran the company under his own name after Joseph Angell Senior retired, and had premises at Compton Street and a retail outlet at 10 Strand.
Condition
This antique Victorian sterling silver claret jug is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition.
The decoration is very sharp, and the gilt is barely worn.
Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the neck of the jug and part hallmarks struck to the overlay are all very clear.
