Engagement Rings – Gemstone Alternatives

RUBY ENGAGEMENT RING

We always pride ourselves in being able to help our customers find the perfect present for a loved one. This is particularly true when it comes to the purchase of an engagement ring.

Engagement rings come in all shapes, sizes and styles. We have a great blog on the different styles of engagement rings through the ages, and also a blog demonstrating how a 1 carat diamond looks on the hand. We aim to give you as much information as possible to help you figure out so which varieties you and your partner might prefer.

You may already have a good idea of what you’re looking for though; if you decide that the traditional diamond solitaire ring is not necessarily perfect for your bride-to-be, then we have a wealth of other options for you to peruse!

All gemstone rings can be engagement rings, although certain types and styles are certainly more popular than others. It is completely dependent on the wearer’s preferences and personal taste. If you think that your other half would prefer something a little more unique- completely one of a kind and original- then look no further than a gemstone engagement ring.

The Best Gemstones for Engagement Rings

Technically speaking, the best gemstones for day to day wear (as is usually the intention with engagement rings) are the most durable and strongest. Be wary of any advice suggesting that a particular stone is much more suitable than another, as truthfully the differences in hardiness are minute. Unless of course, you intended will be wearing the ring while undertaking especially strenuous physical activities.

Rubies and sapphires are particularly strong gemstones, followed closely by emeralds, amethyst, aquamarines, citrine, topaz, tourmaline and tanzanite, (all of these gemstones are relatively sturdy). Generally speaking, pearls and opals are not advised for engagement rings, however with the correct care and caution, they can last a lifetime. The usual advice is to remove any jewellery during potentially strenuous tasks; as long as this is kept in mind, a gemstone engagement ring could be the perfect choice for the love of your life!

Types of Gemstone Engagement Rings

Solitaire Rings

Solitaire gemstone engagement rings are a popular choice with our customers. They are similar to the traditional diamond solitaire in style and shape, but have the added interest of a pop of colour and an unusual stone.

Trilogy & Five Stone Rings

Trilogy rings are another conventional engagement ring choice. Their three stones are said to symbolise the past, present and the future of the relationship that you hope to share for a lifetime. The simplicity of the trilogy ring also appeals to many, with the three stones being incredibly elegant and flattering on the finger.

Vintage Rings

Five stone rings were particularly favoured in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. These elegant rings are said to symbolise the phases of a conventional relationship: friendship, courtship, dating, relationship and marriage. They are favoured by many because of the flattering way that they spread across the whole finger.

Cluster Style Rings

Cluster rings work beautifully as engagement rings, and anything that’s good enough for the duchess of Cambridge is good enough for us! Cluster engagement rings are relatively prevalent, but you will still definitely be able to find a ring which is as original and unique as your future bride! Some clusters feature delicate, dainty diamonds (a similar effect to the halo style), whereas some feature large diamonds, in extraordinary styles. The diamonds complement and enhance the beauty of the gemstone ring.
