This impressive antique George V sterling and alabaster match striker has a globular form.
The surface of the alabaster* body has a carved textured finish which composes a match striker.
The upper portion of this antique match striker retains the original, hallmarked sterling silver mount ornamented with a band of engine turned decoration.
* Alabaster is a mineral / soft rock and has been used through history for carving decorative pieces and artefacts. Between gemmologist and archaeologists there is a difference of opinion on the composition of the mineral, from a fine-grained gypsum to a type of calcite; the calcite variation has been traditionally labelled 'onyx-marble' despite being geologically inaccurate.
