Austrian Silver and Plique-a-Jour Box - Vintage Circa 1940

This unusual vintage Austrian plique-à-jour box has a rectangular form.

The anterior cover is embellished with pierced decoration in the form of an impressive butterfly design surrounded with floral and foliate decoration, all accented with pin-struck decoration to the background.

The pierced decoration to the cover is ornamented with a variety of coloured plique-à-jour enamel panels.

The sides and underside of this unusual and impressive box retain the original blue guilloche enamel panels displaying concentric undulating lines.

The hinged, hallmarked cover of the box is fitted with a subtle shaped thumbpiece.

This collectable vintage box retains the original gilt interior.

The hallmarks to this rim of this impressive box include:

Maker's mark: Unknown

Assay mark: Head of the hoopoe bird, 2, W (Republic of Austria, 900 standard, Vienna)

Silver quality/purity mark: .900 (900 standard, 900/1000)

* Plique-à-jour is a vitreous enamelling technique similar in technical execution to cloisoneé, where the enamel is applied to defined 'cells' within a metal filigree. With plique-à-jour, there is no backing to the design, allowing light to pass through the enamelwork, suggestive of stained glass. Plique-à-jour is derived from the French 'braid letting in daylight'.

This impressive vintage Austrian plique-à-jour box is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent condition in keeping with age.

There are two pinhead size blemishes and slight crazing to a small minority of the enamel panels to the cover, and minor surface scratches to the underside of the box.

The Austrian hallmarks struck to the surface of the rim are clear in keeping with age and location.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this fine example of Austrian silverware.
