Description

This exceptional antique Queen Anne Britannia standard silver* bowl has a plain rounded octagonal panelled form.

The body of this Queen Anne bowl is plain and embellished with a simplified engraved coat of arms depicting on the dexter two lions passant guardant below a bar engrailed, to the sinister a bar between a crescent and three fleur-de-lys.

The upper rim of this impressive bowl is encompassed with an applied moulded border.

The bowl is supported by a panelled swept collet style foot.

This antique bowl, crafted by the renowned London silversmith and plate-worker James Rood, has a fine colour and patination**.

Such period octagonal bowls are highly desirable and scarce to the market.

* Britannia Silver - The Britannia silver standard of 958 (95.84% of fine silver), denoted by the icon of the seated Britannia holding an oval shield, was introduced by William III in 1697. This was to indicate the slightly higher standard of silver from sterling silver standard of 925 (92.5% of fine silver).

** Patination or Patina is a subtle colouration or tarnish which forms on the surface of some metals, produced by oxidation or other chemical processes. A good patina proffers an aesthetically pleasing look.
